Registration is open for the 2018 Athens Marathon, to be held on April 15, 2018. The Athens Marathon is the longest continuously held marathon in the state of Ohio. There is also a half-marathon which is run at the same time. It is one of the main public service projects of the ACARA. Club members provide amateur radio communications support along the course which mostly follows the Athens Bike Path between Athens and Nelsonville. Hams are stationed at each of the aid stations, with race officials, at the finish line and also with bicycle and golf cart mobile units. The bicycle mobile is usually equipped with an APRS system to report the location of the lead runner.
Club members or other hams who wish to help with this project should contact Jeff Slattery, N8SUZ, n8suz “at” yahoo “dot” com. Station assignments and other details will be posted here as they come available.
There is a new starting point this year. The race will start at 8:00 AM from the intersection of South College and East Union Streets – College Gate. The race usually lasts 5-6 hours by the time all runners finish. The full marathon turnaround has also been extended closer to SR 691. The changes are intended to eliminate the lap around Goldsberry Track prior to crossing the finish line. This year, runners will enter the track by the same gate at Shafer Street but will follow the track directly to the finish. The new course has been certified.
