Registration is open for the 2022 Athens Marathon, to be held on April 10, 2022. The Athens Marathon is the longest continuously held marathon in the state of Ohio. There is also a half-marathon which is run at the same time. It is one of the main public service projects of the ACARA. Club members provide amateur radio communications support along the course which mostly follows the Athens Bike Path between Athens and Nelsonville. Hams are stationed at each of the aid stations, with race officials, at the finish line and also with bicycle and golf cart mobile units. The bicycle mobile is usually equipped with an APRS system to report the location of the lead runner.
Club members or other hams who wish to help with this project should contact Jeff Slattery, N8SUZ, n8suz “at” yahoo “dot” com. Station assignments and other details will be posted here as they come available.
The race will start at 8:00 AM from the intersection of South College and East Union Streets – College Gate. The race usually lasts 5-6 hours by the time all runners finish. The full marathon turnaround is close to SR 691. Runners will finish at the Pruitt Field/Goldsberry Track and enter the track by the gate at Shafer Street and will follow the track directly to the finish.
